Five Nigerian government officials have been charged with stealing more than 1bn naira ($6.8m; £4.1m) of funds meant for the National Gallery of Art. Anti-corruption police say gallery head Joe Musa and four colleagues took public money over the past three years for their own personal use. All five deny the charges and a hearing has been set for 19-20 October. President Umaru Yar'Adua made the fight against corruption a main priority of his administration. The president pledged to crack down on corrupt practices, but critics say that the prosecution process is slow and few officials have so far been convicted. |
